Understanding Rivets

Pop Rivets, also known as Blind Rivets, are one of the most widely used permanent fastening solutions for joining sheet metal, plastics, fibreglass, composites and other thin materials. They are designed for fast installation from one side of the workpiece, making them ideal where rear access is limited or where welding and bolting are impractical.

A blind rivet consists of a hollow rivet body and a mandrel pin. During installation, the mandrel is pulled through the rivet body using a rivet gun, causing the rear of the rivet to expand and clamp the materials together. Once the required setting force is reached, the mandrel snaps away, leaving a strong vibration-resistant permanent fixing.

Common Pop Rivet and Blind Rivet types include:

  • Multi Grip Rivets – designed to accommodate a wider range of material thicknesses
  • Tri Fold Rivets – create a large blind-side spread for soft or brittle materials
  • Peel Rivets – form petal-like legs for plastics, fibreglass and thin sheet
  • Structural Rivets – engineered for high-strength fastening applications
  • Closed End Rivets – provide a sealed finish where moisture ingress is a concern
  • Grooved Rivets – suitable for softer materials and specialised anchoring

Blind rivets are commonly manufactured in Aluminium, Steel and Stainless Steel body and mandrel combinations to suit varying corrosion resistance, shear strength and clamping requirements. Selecting the correct rivet generally depends on rivet diameter, grip range, head style, body material, mandrel material and the total thickness of the materials being joined.

Key advantages of Pop Rivets include:

  • Fast single-sided installation with manual or powered rivet tools
  • Permanent fastening that resists loosening under vibration
  • Suitable for thin materials that cannot be welded easily
  • Consistent clamping force with a clean finished appearance
  • Wide suitability across automotive, fabrication, construction, HVAC and industrial assembly

Because different blind rivet types are designed for different grip ranges and material characteristics, choosing the correct rivet is essential for achieving maximum clamp strength, joint reliability and long-term fastening performance.
